Sysco, one of the world's largest food distributors, has been recognized for its sustainability initiative with a James Beard Foundation award.
Sometimes known as the Oscars of Food, the awards have historically recognized the country's finest chefs, restaurants and food critics, according to a news release.

The newest category, the Leadership Award, recognizes recipients who are pioneers in health or sustainability.
Since Houston-based Sysco started its sustainability efforts about six years ago, it has enrolled nearly 800,000 acres into the initiative.
In 2010 alone, participants cut fertilizer use by 6 million pounds, recycled 485,000 tons of materials and diverted more than 41 million tons of processing water to irrigation.
Sysco also enlisted the help of the New York State IPM Program, the Northeastern IPM Center, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in developing its standards.

That's awesome news! It's great that the cog of business can still turn while we recognise our effects on the environment and work to reduce them. Sustainability for us is working with resources intelligently.
