A delegation of Brazilian scientists has visited central Queensland to examine the region's beef genetics practices.
The Department of Employment Economic Development and Innovation says the group toured local grazing properties and yesterday visited the department's beef breeding services unit in Rockhampton.Principal trade officer Morgan Gronold says it is hoped the visit will strengthen trade ties between Queensland and Brazil, with the hope of increasing the export of frozen semen and embryos from Australia.
"But equally as important I think is developing some relationships to try and do some joint research," he said.
"I mean, Brazil is a major beef producer and a major extensive beef producer, so I think the opportunity to collaborate and make sure we're up to date with what we're doing is just as important."
Melissa Miziara works for the Centre of Excellence in bovine genetics in Brazil.
She says there are many similarities between the two countries' beef industries.
"Climate, the way you graze, the pasture and the zebu breed," she said.
"We are here to know the farm, to see what you do and how the system works.
"We know that Australia is very organised in beef production and we want to learn more about your work and see what we can do together."
