As Congress continues to dance around the issue of immigration reform,Progressive Cattleman online readers mostly say the issue isn’t so hot for beef ranchers and producers.
An online poll asking “How critical is immigration to the U.S. beef industry” showed 42 percent saying “Not at all. We don’t rely on that labor segment.”
Another 29 percent called the issue “Very critical. Beef needs more legal workers to be profitable.” And another 29 percent said “Marginally. It would help, but other ag industries need it more.”
Ag states around the country are at the center of the immigration debate, with many in crop and dairy production supporting efforts to ensure more labor on farms and operations. Republicans controlling the House remain uncommitted in sponsoring any legislation at this stage.
The Progressive Cattleman’s next online poll remains on a political note, asking readers how they would grade the federal government on its farm bill negotiations. Weigh in by clicking the grey "vote" graphic on the right-hand side of our website.
