NOTA DE SABADO: Cow controversy over postal stamp

The Australian cattle industry is hoping its choice of beef breed for an Australia Post stamp is not controversial.

Australia Post is issuing first edition stamps to celebrate the Year of the Farmer and it's already released stamps featuring apples, dairy cows, tropical fruit and wine.

David Inall of the Cattle Council of Australia says the lobby group selected the cow bred in Australia, neither the popular southern Angus, nor brahman in the north.

"That was a challenging question when it came through and it was nice to be involved in a decision of a more fun nature.

"And we certainly considered the north/south divide and the bos indicis versus the bos taurus

"The breed that we've gone with is the droughtmaster which is a combination of both taurus and indicus and we've got a great photo that we've given to Australia Post."

  1. In northern Australia we regularly get a good laugh out of southern advertisers, who have put Bos Taurus cattle in their ads though aimed at northern beef producers. Hairy Herefords, Angus etc do not do well in the humid tropical regions, where almost all cattle are Bos Indicus breeds. Pleased to see at least Australia Post was smart enough to be diplomatic.
